Youth Engagement Intern Worker

POSITION TITLE:   Client / Youth Engagement Intern

Location:         Sault Ste. Marie                                Reports to:      Clinical Supervisor / Manager

Salary:             Annual salary of $36,818.60             Reference #:  IACS-0419-01

POSITION SUMMARY:

The organization’s goals are to ensure that clients who are youth who have lived experience with mental illness can work towards de-stigmatizing mental illness in the broader community; and to ensure that youth with lived experience with mental illness have a meaningful voice in how Algoma Family Services (AFS) conducts its business in order to be responsive to their needs.  This initiative supports the organization’s Strategic Priority relative to Client and Youth Engagement, i.e., our efforts to:

  • reduce the stigmatization of receiving mental health services  
  • improve community awareness around mental health issues affecting local children and youth
  • broaden and coordinate community strategies around youth engagment
  • establish partnerships with other local youth engagement programs
  • empower youth clients to have a voice in how AFS can help meet their mental health needs
  • help improve the likelihood that the services AFS delivers are meaningful and effective for our clientele
  • develop youth leaders

As well, through these efforts the ongoing development of the culture within AFS as a “learning organization” is enhanced.

The Youth Intern will actively participate with the AFS staff in planning how best to lead the organization toward establishing client and youth engagement as a permanent influence in how we do business

 

QUALIFICATONS:

  • Recent graduate of an accredited post-secondary institution with a degree or diploma in Human Services, Communications Studies, Marketing, Public Relations or related programs (within the last three (3) years).
  • Position must provide intern with first time employment in their field of study.
  • Proficiency with computers, especially Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and internet research.
  • The ability to prepare presentation and promotional materials with Microsoft Office Products and other market software products such as Canva. 
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage relationships with colleagues, youth, and volunteers.
  • Ability to set priorities and work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines within a project management framework.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with a strong attention to details.
  • Availability to work flexible hours (some evening and weekend work apply).
  • Possession of a valid Ontario Driver’s License (minimum of Class G2 if over the age of 19 and Class G license if 19 and under), ability to travel, and use of a personal vehicle.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Clinical Supervisor / Manager, and within agency policies, procedures and general practices, the Client / Youth Engagement Intern is responsible for the following:

  1. To provide support to the youth engagement group called “YOUNION” through project management and group facilitation.
  2. To assist with establishing “evidence informed” polices, procedures and practice related to youth engagement at AFS which may include:
  3.  
    1. conducting research around the best practicies for engaging youth, 
    2. developing surveys to solicit opinions and feedback from AFS youth, their families, and staff, 
    3. other methods of soliciting information, such as focus groups.To project manage youth initiated and planned events as they relate to youth engagement.
  4. To develop strategies for the recruitment and ongoing engagement of youth/clients to participate on committees, and in youth-driven events and activities.
  5. To assist with the development of agency policies and procedures in relation to youth  engagement.
  6. To design new processes, and integrate existing processes to promote and sustain youth  engagement.
  7. To develop a communication plan to market both internally and externally the youth  engagement project, including:
    1. to develop marketing materials and communication tools
    2. to utilize social media strategies for effective engagement
    3. to develop a campaign to engage AFS staffTo develop strategies for adult ally recruitment and retention.
  8. Participate, as assigned, in any relevant internal or external committees.
  9. Take initiative to develop a personal professional development plan, as appropriate.
  10. Participate in the supervisory, peer consultation processes, quality assurance, program evaluation and accreditation processes, as appropriate.
  11. To develop/update a manual outlining the AFS Youth Engagement framework and processes.
  12. To assume other responsibilities as assigned from time to time by the Clinical Supervisor / Manager or designate.
